Auto Repair Questions & Answers
Straight answers to the questions Houston drivers ask most about car repair.
FAQ
Common questions
How much does a repair cost in Houston?
It depends on the car and what's wrong. We check it first, then give you an estimate before any work starts, so you decide.
My check engine light is on. Is it safe to drive?
A steady light usually means get it checked soon. A flashing light means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, so it's best to stop driving and call us.
Do I need an appointment?
Calling ahead is best so we can plan time for your car. Call us and we'll find a time that works.
Do you work on trucks and SUVs?
Yes. We work on cars, trucks and SUVs. Call us with the year, make and model if you want to check.
Will you call before doing extra work?
Yes. If we find something beyond the original estimate, we call you first. Nothing extra gets done without your OK.
How often should I change my oil?
It depends on your car and the oil it uses. Many newer cars go 5,000 to 10,000 miles; your owner's manual or the reminder on your dash is the best guide. Hot weather and stop-and-go driving are harder on oil.
Why does my car's A/C blow warm?
Common causes are low refrigerant from a leak, a failing compressor or clutch, a bad fan or an electrical problem. We test the system to find the cause before replacing anything.
FAQ
Service questions
Can you just read the code?
We can, but the code alone doesn't say which part failed. Testing finds the actual cause so you don't replace parts you don't need.
Will the light go off by itself?
Sometimes, if the problem was temporary, like a loose gas cap. If it comes back, the problem is still there.
How long do brake pads last?
It varies a lot with driving. City and highway traffic wears them faster. We measure them so you know how much is left.
Do I need new rotors with new pads?
Not always. If the rotors are within spec and smooth, they can stay. If they're grooved, warped or too thin, they should be replaced.
Can you just recharge it?
We can, but if it's low, it's leaking. Finding and fixing the leak keeps it cold for the long haul.
How do you find an A/C leak?
With dye, an electronic detector and pressure testing, depending on the system.
Synthetic or conventional oil?
Use what your owner's manual calls for. Many newer cars require synthetic.
Do you check other things during an oil change?
Yes: fluids, belts, hoses, tires, filters and lights. We'll tell you if anything needs attention.
Is it worth fixing my older car?
It depends on the repair and the rest of the car. We'll give you an honest take so you can decide.
Should I flush my transmission fluid?
Follow the service interval for your car. If the fluid is dark or smells burnt, get it checked.
How long do car batteries last in Houston?
Heat shortens battery life, so they often don't last as long here as in cooler places. We can test yours anytime.
Is it my battery or my alternator?
Testing tells us. A good battery that keeps dying often points to the alternator or a drain.
